McDermott Leads Golf at Royal Lakes Invitational

Senior is top finisher for the Ducks in next-to-last event of the fall season

The Basics
  • The lead: Senior Eegan McDermott was the top finisher to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team Tuesday at the Royal Lakes Invitational, hosted by No. 11 Oglethorpe University.
  • Score: Stevens (305-325=630) - 20th place out of 22 teams.
  • Location: Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club - Flowery Branch, Ga. (Par 72 - 6,717 yards)
  • Short Story: Playing alongside some of the top Division III programs in the country, McDermott carded a 3-over 75 in the opening round and finished 5-over Tuesday to wrap up the two-date event 8-over. The mark was tied for 55th out of 124 competitors. McDermott birdied four holes in the opening round and was outstanding through the front nine Tuesday, posting five birdies to finish 5-under through nine holes. The East Brunswick, New Jersey native tied for second in the tournament with nine birdies.
  • The Leaderboard: No. 13 Washington & Lee won the team title, finishing 5-under for the tournament. The Generals finished two strokes ahead of No. 14 Greensboro and the pair were the only teams to finish under par. A total of seven teams ranked in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll competed in Oglethorpe's annual event. On the individual side, Birmingham Southern's Tanner Bronnum shot a 68 in each round to finish 8-under for the tournament, to finish one stroke ahead of Greensboro's JZeke Dukes and Washington & Lee's Robinson. Dukes and (No. 25) Averett's Caleb Kimbrough each finished Tuesday 5-under to match Robinson's opening-round score of 67 to represent the lowest round in the field. 

The Finishes
  • First-year Brock Dickson totaled five birdies across the two rounds to finish 11-over for the tournament, tying for 69th place.
  • Senior Miles Philion was the Ducks' third finisher, totaling seven birdies to finish 16-over.
  • Junior Gus Vickers (+19) and sophomore Eduardo Terlaje (+20) rounded the Ducks' contingent. Vickers and Terlaje combined for eight birdies.
  • The average score for the 22 competing teams was a 76.94 in the opening round and a 76.76 Tuesday, 
  • As a team, Stevens ranked sixth with an average score of 3.10 on par-3 holes, with Philion (-2) and McDermott (-1) tying for third and sixth, respectively, among the individual golfers. As a team, the Ducks also tied for sixth with 29 birdies.

  • "While certainly not the results we were looking for, I'll focus on the positives, while appreciating the opportunity to have us compete with some of the best teams in Division III golf in very good weather. It's a true learning experience for our group."
