Colin Mahoney and senior
Dylan Woodward each finished with a team-high 13 victories to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team to a 5-1 record Sunday at the first part of the Rangers Fall Invitational, hosted by Drew University at the Simon Forum.
As a team, the Ducks posted victories over Drew (21-6 and 15-12), Vassar (15-12), Army (21-6) and Yeshiva (26-1) and dropped a hard-fought decision to NJIT (20-7) in the first event of the season. Stevens closed competition with a 5-1 record.
"It was a really good start to the season for us," head men's and women's fencing coach James Carpenter said. "I'm really happy with the close wins over Drew and Vassar, and it was great to see Colin really step up his game, going 13-2 against a tough field."
Collectively, Mahoney and Woodward's efforts helped the sabre group to an impressive 43-11 mark on the day, that included perfect 9-0 performances that bookended the day. Mahoney went a perfect 3-0 against Drew (twice) and Army, while winning his only bout against Yeshiva. He also added two wins against NJIT and one against Vassar to round out his day. Woodward, meanwhile, went 3-0 against Drew (B), Vassar and Yeshiva and won a pair of bouts against both Drew (A) and Army.
Among the other sabreists, sophomore
John Morreale had nine wins, while junior
Christopher Stone had six. Graduate student
Matthew Jacobson went 2-1 on the day to move within two of 100 career wins. Among the foilists, sophomore
Thomas Cheng and first-year
Nick Reznick each had six, while first-years
James Glover and
Aden Vishnevsky and sophomore
Rocco Mathews each had five. Senior
Andrew Bauman had two wins to round out the foil wins.
For the epee group, fifth-year
Andy Faubert led the way with eight wins, while sophomore
Nicholas Smith and first-year
Andrew Yurovchak each had seven. Junior
Erik Marran had five wins and graduate student
Wolfe Crouse had four. Senior
James Morris had two to round out the Ducks' wins on the day.
Collectively, the sabre squad's 43 wins, and 5-1 record, were tops among the Ducks' three weapon groups, although each group posted a winning record on the day. The epee team finished 33-21 and went 3-3 on the day, while the foilists went 29-25 across the six matchups and finished with a 4-2 record.
The Ducks began the day with a 21-6 victory over Drew and would defeat Army by the same margin in the fifth dual of the day. After falling to NJIT 20-7, the Ducks rebounded with consecutive hard-fought 15-12 victories over Vassar and Drew. Stevens closed out the event with a decisive 26-1 victory over the Maccabees. The two wins over the Rangers pushed the Ducks' winning streak in the all-time series to five, while the Ducks have claimed the last two meetings with the Brewers. Impressively, Stevens has won the last 28 meetings with Army and the last 30 matchups with Yeshiva.
The event marked the collegiate debuts for Glover, Reznick and Vishnevsky.
