NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 20, 2022) – First-year
Nick Reznick was one of four student-athletes with 10 wins to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team to a 4-1 record Sunday at the MACFA Group 'A' vs. 'B' event, hosted by Hunter College at its SportsPlex complex.
Sophomore
Colin Mahoney and classmate
John Morreale joined senior Dyaln Woodward in totaling 10 wins on the day for the Ducks, who closed the day 22-4 and 4-1 in MACFA play.
As a team, the Ducks posted decisive wins over Cornell (25-2), Rutgers (21-6) and Rowan (22-5), while also posting a 17-10 victory over area rival Drew. The only blemish on the day was a hard-fought 14-13 setback to Lafayette.
"The guys fenced great again today, especially since we were missing some key players today due to injury," head coach
Jim Carpenter said. "Looking forward to the winter break for everyone to heal up!"
As a team, the Ducks had an impressive day on the strips, finishing with a 98-37 record. The sabre group was nearly perfect, posting a 41-4 mark, which included perfect 9-0 marks against both Cornell and Rowan. The epee squad finished 32-13 and joined the sabreists in posting weapon victories over all five opponents. Finally, the foilists capped the day with a 25-20 mark, which included a 9-0 triumph over Cornell.
Individually, sophomore
Nicholas Smith finished second on the team with eight wins on the day, while graduate student
Andy Faubert and first-year
Andrew Yurovchak each had seven. Sophomore foilist
Rocco Mathews totaled six wins, while first-year
James Glover and junior
Christopher Stone had five. Graduate student Matthew Jacobsen collected four wins at sabre, with junior
Erik Marran (3), senior
James Morris (2), first-year
Aden Vishnevsky (2), sophomore
Evan Peneiras (2), first-year
David Ryder Bidwell (2) and junior
Caleb Romero (2) accounting for the Ducks with multiple wins on the day. First-year
Sean Crann, sophomore
Jose Martinez-Ponce and first-year
Yash Yagnik added one win each to round out the victors. The event marked the collegiate debut for Crann, Yagnik and fellow first-year
Esat Adiloglu. Crann and Yagnik also posted their first career victory, while Martinez-Ponce earned his first win of the season.
Stevens began the day with an impressive 25-2 victory over Cornell, avenging a narrow 15-12 setback from earlier in the season. The Ducks have won 12 of the last 13 meetings with the Big Red. The dual with Lafayette followed and the Leopards escaped with a narrow victory with the result at foil proving to be the difference in the match, snapping the Ducks' 21-match winning streak in the series. However, the Ducks quickly responded, posting double-digit victories over Rutgers and Rowan, before closing the day with their eighth straight victory over the Rangers.
Up Next: After the winter break, men's fencing returns to the strips on Jan. 29 for the annual Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by MIT.
