The Basics
  • The lead: Junior Gus Vickers tied for eighth place to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team at the two-day, season-opening "The Gauntlet" tournament.
  • Score: Stevens (299-290=589) - seventh place of 14 teams. The Ducks' 290 on the final day of competition was the second-lowest round in the tournament and good for the fourth-lowest round in program history. The two-round score of 589 was also the fourth-lowest score in program history. The team's nine-stroke improvement was also the second among the teams that finished ahead of the Ducks.
  • Location: Dauphin Highlands Golf Course - Harrisburg, Pa. (Par 72 - 6,914 yards)
  • Short Story: After a record-setting performance in last spring's conference championship tournament, against questionable conditions Sunday, Vickers notched four birdies to remain in the hunt through 18 holes. The Naples, Florida native then birdied three holes Monday to finish even-par for the tournament, tying for eighth place with four other golfers. A total of 75 golfers competed in the event. Vickers was one of 12 golfers to finish ever-par or better. Vickers' two-round score of 144 is tied for third-lowest 36-hole total in program history.
  • The Leaderboard: Although Stevens finished in seventh place, the Ducks were just six shots off the pace behind McDaniel College, who won the team title with a 7-over 583. Two of the six teams that finished ahead of Stevens are among those receiving votes in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll. Individually, Gettysburg's Daniel Suter took first place, 5-under for the tournament.

The Finishes
  • Senior Miles Philion tied for 13th place, finishing 1-over (145) for the tournament. The Delhi, New York native did not record a birdie through the first 18 holes, however, Philion rebounded in a big way Monday, carding three birdies and an eagle to finish with a 3-under 69. His second-round score was tied for the second-lowest by any golfer in the field.
  • Senior Eegan McDermott finished third on the team, finishing 5-over for the tournament. The East Brunswick, New Jersey native totaled four birdies across the two rounds.
  • Sophomore Eduardo Terlaje (151) and sophomore Will Fulton (157) rounded out the Ducks' team scores. Fulton knocked seven strokes off his opening-round score - tied for the largest improvement on the team across the two rounds.
  • Competing as an independent golfer, first-year Brock Dickson made his collegiate debut and finished 12-over 156. The Barrington, Illinois native knocked two strokes off his opening round score.

From the Greens (Head Coach Charles Papendick)
  • "This was a very good start for us. I am very proud of our team's performance and their resolve in improving from the first round to the final one. For me, the key takeaway is not that we finished seventh, but, rather, that we finished one shot behind two teams consistently ranked among the top-30 teams in Division III. We'll get back to work this week to continue working towards our goals."
