The Basics
  • The lead: Junior Gus Vickers scored his second career victory to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team to first place Monday at the FDU-Florham Fall Invitational.
  • Score: Stevens (302) - first of 15 teams. The victory was the first of the season for the Ducks and the 13th under current head coach Charles Papendick.
  • Location: Mendham Golf & Tennis Club - Mendham, N.J. (Par 72 - 6,514 yards)
  • Short Story: For the third straight event, Vickers is the top finisher for the Ducks, this time, carding a 2-under 70 to win the individual title by five strokes over senior Eegan McDermott, finishing first out of 75 golfers. Vickers, who was the only player under par, totaled four birdies and was 3-under over the front nine. Vickers' championship was his second and the Naples, Florida native became just the fourth player in program history to win multiple tournaments. Monday's 2-under par was Vickers' sixth round scoring par or better and matched the fourth-best round versus par in program history.
  • The Leaderboard: As a team, the Ducks finished 13 strokes ahead of Drew. Stevens also entered a second group, who finished ninth.
  • Of note: A storm held up play by approximately one hour.

The Finishes
  • McDermott finished 3-over 75. The fourth-year golfer totaled two birdies and tied for second with Mount Saint Mary's Pat Shea.
  • Senior Miles Philion birdied a pair of holes, including the par-four 18th hole to finish three strokes behind McDermott and Shea at 6-over 78. He tied for fifth.
  • First-year Brock Dickson and sophomore Eduardo Terlaje finished one shot behind Philion at 7-over. Each golfer carded a pair of birdies on the day.
  • First-year Punn Chittaratlert was the top finisher on the Ducks' second entrant, finishing one stroke behind Terlaje and Dickson at 9-over.
  • Senior Clement Shao and junior Joss Hindin saw their first action of the season. Shao carded one birdie en route to finishing 11-over, while Hindin eagled the par-5 eighth hole and finished 16-over.
  • Sophomore Will Fulton finished 13-over to round out the Ducks' full contingent.

From the Greens (Head Coach Charles Papendick)
  • "While we didn't play our best, and had a one-hour weather delay, it was nice to have our entire team competing for the first time. It was a great opportunity for our less experienced players, who enjoyed the team win. Thanks to Miles, Eegan, Eduardo and Brock for hanging in there in difficult conditions."
  • "I'm, again, extremely thrilled for Gus, who continues to show why he's becoming a leader and potentially, the best golfer that has ever attended Stevens."

Up Next
  • Golf returns to the course on Oct. for the two-day Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic. The annual event, hosted by McDaniel College, will be contested at the Waynesboro Country Club.
