MADISON, N.J. (October 29, 2023) – Junior sabreur
John Morreale finished with a team-high 11 victories as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team posted a 5-2 record Sunday at the season-opening Rangers Fall Invitational, hosted by Drew University at the Simon Forum.
Senior
Christopher Stone (sabre) and sophomore
Andrew Yurovchak (epee) each recorded 10 victories and first-year
Noah Tumibay won nine times in collegiate debut for the Ducks, who have won at least five duals in each of their three appearances at Drew's season-opening event.
As a team, the Ducks defeated Lafayette 14-13 and posted consecutive 24-3 decisions over Yeshiva and Clemson, before dropping a 16-11 decision to NJIT and a 17-10 result to Drew. The Ducks responded with consecutive wins over Vassar (15-12) and Rutgers (16-10) to close the day. The event-opening victory over the Leopards returned Stevens to its winning ways in the all-time series after Lafayette squeaked by the Ducks 14-13 last year. While the Ducks continued to assert their dominance in the all-time series with Yeshiva, Rutgers and Clemson, they've dropped the four matches with NJIT. The narrow win over Vassar marked the Ducks' fourth straight win over the Brewers.
In addition to Tumibay, the event marked the collegiate debuts for first-years
Liam Thomas (foil),
Cyrus Erachshaw (sabre),
Tyler Kometani (sabre),
Kyle Stamis (sabre) and
Riley Parker (epee).
The Rundown
- Against Lafayette, the sides exchanged 7-2 margins of victory at sabre and foil, with Stamis posting a perfect 3-0 record over the Leopards in his first-ever collegiate bouts. Morreale and Stone posted two wins each at sabre, while junio Rocco Mathews had the Ducks' two foil wins. The final result ultimately came down epee, where graduate student Patrick Pan posted a 2-1 mark and Yurovhcak went a perfect 3-0 to boost Stevens to victory.
- Dominant wins over Yeshiva and Clemson followed. Vishnevsky and Thomas were each a perfect 3-0 against the Maccabees at foil as did Erachshaw, Kometani and Stamis at sabre. Parker and senior Caleb Romero each were perfect at epee against Yeshiva to close out the victory. Against Clemson, 13 different Ducks went undefeated.
- The Ducks were carried by the epee group against Vassar (6-3) and Rutgers (7-1), marking the only group to win both weapon battles. Interestingly, both foil and sabre combined to go 9-9 against the Brewers and the Scarlet Knights .
- The Ducks were unable to find similar success against NJIT and Drew. The epee group combined to go 11-7 in the Ducks' two setbacks on the day, but, unfortunately, the other two weapons fell to their respective counterparts. Junior Colin Mahoney posted a 3-0 mark against NJIT in his only bouts on the day, while Morreale and Tumibay were perfect (3-0) against Drew. Morreale's11 wins on the day moved the Wall, New Jersey native within three of the 100-win club, while Pan needs one more victory to reach the milestone.
- Thomas and Stamis each posted eight wins on the day in their first time representing Stevens on the strips. Parker, junior Nicholas Smith, Erachshaw and sophomore Aden Vishnevsky each won a total of six bouts. Mathews finished with five wins, as did Pan. Graduate student Jack Corridon had four wins, while Romero, Kometani, Sophomore James Glover and senior Erik Marran each finished with three. Sophomore Nick Reznick and sophomore Yash Yagnik had two wins, while junior Evan Peneiras each won once to account for Stevens' victories on the day.

- As a weapon group, the foil squad defeated Yeshiva and Clemson via identical margins (7-2) and Rutgers (6-3), while the sabre team defeated Lafayette (7-2), Yeshiva (9-0), Clemson (9-0) and Vassar (6-3). The epee group won all seven matches against their respective counterparts. The sabre group's 9-0 wins over Yeshiva and Clemson marked the Ducks' best weapon performances of the day.
