Vickers Leads the Way For Men's Golf at Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic

The senior shot an even par 72 in the final round.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. (October 8, 2023) – Senior Gus Vickers tallied an even par 72 in the second round to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team at the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic, hosted by McDaniel College and Gettysburg College at the Waynesboro Country Club. 

The Rundown

Vickers, who finished 2-over in the opening round, carded four birdies and an eagle on Sunday. Vickers placed T-11th for the event, which was best on the team. The Waynesboro Country Club is a par 72, 6.596-yard course. The Naples, Florida native totaled seven birdies across the two-day event and finished two-over.

As a team, the Ducks posted 304's in both rounds of the tournament, slotting them in 11th place out of 19 teams. Stevens' consistency kept them tied or in solo possession of 11th place at the end of each round. Dickinson College wound up with a winning score of 16-over (593) overall, with York finishing just one stroke back. Roanoke finished one stroke behind York to round out the top three.

Individually, there was a four-way tie for first place, with York's Matt Slater,  McDaniel's Charlie Dolan, Stevenson's Sean Dowd, and Roanoke's Palmer Cuny each finishing at 2-under for the tournament.

Top Performers

  • Vickers was one of just 13 players to card an eagle in the tournament.
  • Sophomore Austin Liao finished in second place for the Ducks and T-22nd overall, shooting 5- over (149) for the tournament. He carded nine birdies on the weekend, which led the Ducks and was third overall in the tournament.
  • First-year Sebastian Beaver finished in third place for the Ducks and T-30th overall. He was 1-under after the first nine on Sunday. He finished the tournament 7-over (151). He totaled six birdies across the two days.
  • First-year Dillion Kim also had a solid showing, shooting a 18-over 152 for the weekend. He tallied 22 pars.
  • Sophomore Punn Chittaratlert rounded out the scores for the Ducks, as he was 21-over (165) for the weekend. He carded three birdies.

For the Opponents

  • Five players in the field finished under par for the tournament while eight finished even par or better. 
  • The top five teams were separated by just five strokes.
  • The field was made up of two teams ranked in the Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Preseason Coaches' Poll and another three that received votes.
