No. 5 Men’s Fencing Falls to Nationally-Ranked Columbia and Johns Hopkins

Three Ducks notch a pair of wins in next-to-last event of the fall semester

rNEW YORK, N.Y. (November 18, 2023) – First-year epeeist Noah Tumibay was one of three fencers to win twice on the day as No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing fell to No. 2 Columbia University and No. 2 Johns Hopkins University Saturday, in the Lions' annual invitational at the Dodge Fitness Center.

Graduate student sabreur Dylan Woodward and sophomore foilist Nick Reznick also won twice for the Ducks, who fell to Columbia 21-6 before falling to the Blue Jays 22-5. Columbia held the second spot in the United States Fencing Coaches Association Preseason Poll, while Johns Hopkins was ranked second in the Division III-specific poll. The setbacks dropped Stevens' record to 7-9 heading into the final event of the fall semester.

The Rundown
  • Columbia took control of the dual with decisive wins at foil (8-1) and sabre (7-2). Junior Rocco Mathews (foil), Woodward and junior Colin Mahoney earned wins over the Lions. Tumibay earned a pair of wins at epee, while junior Nicholas Smith and graduate student Patrick Pan also earned a victory to produce the final margin. 
  • Against Hopkins, Reznick posted both of his wins, while Woodward, first-year Cyrus Erachshaw and junior John Morreale each won once. 

Top Performers
  • Collectively, the sabre squad had the best record on the day, posting a 5-13 (.278 winning percentage) record, with the epee (3-15, .167) and foil (3-15, .167) teams close behind. 
  • In terms of weapon battles, the Ducks' best performance of the day was at epee, where the group fell to their counterparts from Columbia via a narrow 5-4 margin. The sabre group had the team's second-best performance of the day, winning three of the nine bouts versus Johns Hopkins.
