NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 19, 2023) – Junior
Colin Mahoney finished with a team-high eight wins to lead No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing to a 3-2 record Sunday at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) Group 'A' versus Group 'B' event, hosted by Hunter College.

The Rundown
- The day began with a narrow 14-13 defeat to Cornell. The Ducks held a 6-3 edge at epee and a 5-4 mark at sabre, with Morreale, Woodward, Tumibay and sophomore Andrew Yurovchak all posting winning records against the Big Red. Cornell earned the dual win with a 7-2 score at foil, with Marran and sophomore Nick Reznick earning the wins for Stevens.
- The Ducks reversed the score of their opening dual with a 14-13 triumph over Lafayette, the Ducks' second straight one-point victory over the Leopards. A combined 14-4 effort across the sabre and epee secured the dual win. Mahoney and Stamis went a combined 5-0 at sabre, while Tumibay and first-year Riley Parker pairing for a 4-0 mark to spur the Ducks on to victory. Junior Nicholas Smith and first-year Cyrus Erachshaw each went 2-1 at their respective weapons to boost the Ducks' totals.
- Stevens extended their winning streak against Rutgers to 15 with an 18-9 victory over the Scarlet Knights. All three weapons defeated their counterparts, with foil and epee each going 5-4 and sabre posting an 8-1 mark. Marran, first-year Liam Thomas combined for four wins at foil, while Mahoney and Morreale each went 3-0 at sabre, while Woodward was 2-0. Parker posted a 3-0 mark to lead epee, while senior Caleb Romero went 2-1 to secure the weapon win for Stevens.
- The squad's best performance of the day came against Rowan as the Ducks dropped just two bouts to the Profs in winning 25-2 for Stevens' fourth straight win over Rowan. Sabre and foil each went unblemished against the Profs. Marran and Thomas were joined by sophomore Aden Vishnevsky all won three times at foil, while senior Christopher Stone joined Stamis and first-year Tyler Kometami in posting three wins at sabre. The epee group, meanwhile, posted its second 7-2 mark of the afternoon, with Romero going 3-0, while graduate student James Morris and junior Jose Martinez-Ponce each went 2-1 in their only action of the day. Martinez-Ponce's two wins were his first of the year.
- The day closed with a hard-fought 14-13 setback to Drew University. The Ducks held a 5-4 edge at epee, with Yurovchak leading the way with three wins, with Pan and Smith each winning once. The strong play carried over at sabre, where Mahoney and Woodward each went 3-0 and Morreale went 2-1 to spark an 8-1 weapon victory. Unfortunately, the Rangers squeaked ahead of the Ducks with a sweep of the foil bouts. Drew has won two of the last three meetings between the sides, but Stevens has claimed nine of the last 11.
- In terms of individual wins, Yurovchak, Romero and Thomas all won five bouts, while Parker finished with four. Smith, Erachshaw, Kometani, Stone and Vishnevsky all won three bouts, while Reznick and junior Rocco Mathews each won once to account for the Stevens victories on the afternoon.
Top Performers
- Collectively, the sabre team had the best winning percentage on the day, dropping just eight bouts in posting a 37-8 record (.822) on the day for the best collective weapon performance of the first half of the season. The epee group had the second-best mark of the day, going 30-15 (.667), while the foilists went 16-29 (.356). As a team, Stevens finished competition with an 83-52 record (.615).
- Within the weapon groups, the sabre team defeated its respective counterparts in all five duals and pitched a 9-0 shutout of Rowan. Epee also went a perfect 5-0 on the day, including edging both Rutgers and Drew via 5-4 scores. Foil won twice, besting Rutgers (5-4) and Rowan (9-0).
