NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 2, 2023) – First-year
Doug Winant finished sixth in the 60-meter dash in his collegiate debut to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's indoor track and field team Saturday at the season-opening Winter Opener, hosted by The College of New Jersey at the New York City Armory.
Winant completed the race in 7.23 seconds to finish sixth out of 46 runners. The Manalapan, New Jersey native's time was the third-fastest among the Division III runners in the field. Princeton's Jackson Clarke won the race in 6.87 seconds, with SUNY Delhi's Devin Jones finishing in 7.05 seconds as the top DIII finisher.
In addition to Winant, the meet marked the collegiate debut for first-years
Tyler Hackett,
George Maroun,
Joshua Lim,
Chris Persico and
Justin Gajewski, while
Ryan Paradine made his indoor debut and taking to the cross country course for the first time as a collegian in the fall.
A total of 15 teams competed in the single-day event and team scores were not compiled.
The Rundown
Sophomore
Connor Robinson joined Winant in the unseeded 60-meter dash field, finishing 10th in a time of 7.30 seconds. The race marked his first indoor 60. Robinson also competed in the 300.
Sophomore
Kyle Savino was the Ducks' top finisher in the 300-meter dash, finishing 19th in a time of 36.48 seconds.
Paradine ran an impressive first collegiate mile, placing 10th (seventh among DIII competitors) with a time of 4:39.55. Sophomore
Mark Bigsby also posted a top-20 finish, completing the race in 4:48.94.
Sophomore
Mick Barbi ran his first indoor 5,000 and finished 20th (17th among DIII runners) with a time of 17:02.14.
Lim matched Winant with a sixth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.87 meters. The Harrington Park, New Jersey native also competed in the triple jump, touching 12.35 meters on his final attempt to finish 14th.
Persico tied for 11th place in the pole vault, with a height of 3.85 meters. Senior
Andrew Anantharajah and sophomore
Kyle Miller also cleared 3.85 meters, but required more attempts and tied for 15th place.
Senior
Colin Keady had the Ducks' third, sixth-place finish, hitting 14.20 meters in the weight throw on his first attempt. The mark set a new PR by nearly a quarter-of-a-meter.
