HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 5, 2023) – Graduate student Matthew Jacobson had a team-high eight victories at sabre as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team to a 3-1 record Sunday at the MACFA Group B Round Robin at Canavan Arena.

Fifth-year Vaughn Rice (sabre) had six wins and junior Christopher Stone (sabre) and first-year David Ryder Bidwell (sabre), along with senior Andrew Bauman (foil) and sophomore Thomas Cheng (foil) each added five for the Ducks, who posted wins over Hunter (26-1) Army (17-10) and Yeshiva (27-0), which were sandwiched around a hard-fought 14-13 setback to New Jersey Institute of Technology. The 3-1 record on the day moved Stevens' season mark to 26-10, including a 7-2 record in conference duals.

Prior to the event, the Ducks recognized six seniors: Bauman, Jack Corridon, Wolfe Crouse, Andy Faubert, Jacobson and Rice, for their efforts and contributions to the men's fencing program.

Individually, sophomore foilist Evan Peneiras and first-year teammate Aden Vishnevsky each added four wins as a total of 26 fencers each won at least one match. sophomore John Morreale (sabre), senior Patrick Pan (epee), sophomore Nicholas Smith (epee) and first-years Nick Reznick (foil), Sean Crann (epee), Matthew Kemenosh (epee), Yash Yagnik (epee) and Andrew Yurovchak (epee) each had three. Sophomore Colin Mahoney (sabre), senior Dylan Woodward (sabre), sophomore Rocco Mathews (foil), Crouse, Faubert, senior James Morris (epee) and junior Caleb Romero (epee) recorded two wins apiece, while Corridon, junior Erik Marran (epee) and first-year James Glover (foil) each added one to round out the Ducks' victories on the day.

Collectively, the sabre group posted an impressive 31-5 record on the day, winning against all four opponents, while the epee group went 28-8. The foilists went 24-12 to round out the weapon group performances.

Posting decisive wins against both Hunter and Yeshiva, the Ducks' epee and sabre squads each posted 6-3 margins against Army, while the foilists went 5-4. In the most exciting of the 10 duals contested on the day, Stevens and NJIT split at sabre and foil to tie the score at nine heading into the final weapon. With the Ducks leading 4-3 at epee, NJIT's Niels Roubailo scored a sudden-death point after the match time had expired to draw the teams even. In the final bout of the match, the Highlanders' Robert Hondor jumped out to a 4-2 lead on Crouse, only to see Crouse rally with two straight points to even the score. Unfortunately, Hondor earned the touch on the final point to secure a 5-4 weapon win for NJIT and a 14-13 edge in the match score. The Highlanders have won the last three meetings in the all-time series.
