MADISON, N.J. (March 5, 2023) – Fifth-year
Andy Faubert won gold at epee to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team to a third-place finish Sunday at the annual MACFA Championships, hosted by Drew University.
After amassing a 114-12 record, Johns Hopkins University won its 31st team title. NJIT finished second with 106 wins, with Drew (94) and Rutgers (86) rounding out the top five. The Ducks won 101 of their 126 bouts to boast a winning percentage of 80% to finish third out of the 15 competing teams.
Faubert stood atop the podium after winning four matches as the 11th seed in the 16-seed tournament. First, the Danville, California native topped Navy's Garret Brandreth via a 15-4 decision before topping Lafayette's Tyler Morse 15-10 to reach the semifinals. Faubert continued his march through the bracket with a 15-12 win over second-seeded Jorge Gana of Johns Hopkins. In the final, Faubert walked away with a 13-11 win over top-seeded Neils Roubailo. Roubailo conceded 18 points over his first three matches. Faubert is the first Duck to earn an individual gold medal since Daniel Burke also stood atop the epee podium in 2013.
As a group, the Ducks' epee squad of Faubert, senior
Patrick Pan, sophomore
Nicholas Smith and first-year
Andrew Yurovchak earned bronze after posting an impressive 35 wins against just seven defeats, finishing just two wins shy of gold-medal winning NJIT.
At sabre, the Ducks took silver, with the trio of sophomores
Colin Mahoney and
John Morreale, along with junior
Christopher Stone totaling 37 wins against five losses. The Ducks were three wins shy of gold-medal winning Johns Hopkins, who went 40-2 on the day. Hopkins won gold at both sabre and foil, while earning silver at epee.
The Ducks finished seventh at foil to round out the team weapon standings.
In addition to Faubert's gold-medal winning performance, Morreale and Mahoney finished sixth and seventh, respectively at sabre, while sophomore
Thomas Cheng was the Ducks' top finisher at foil, placing 12th.
