Golf's Philion Wins Alvernia Invitational

Senior scored four-stroke victory for first career win

The Basics
  • The lead: Senior Miles Philion finished first out of 60 competitors to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team to a second-place tie Tuesday at the Alvernia University Invitational.
  • Score: Stevens (299-308=607) – tied for second place out of 12 teams
  • Location: Stonewall Golf Club (Round 1) – Chester, Pa. (Par 70 – 6,502 yards) | LedgeRock Golf Club (Round 2) – Mohnton, Pa. (Par 72 – 6,797 yards)
  • Short Story: Philion fired an impressive 2-under 68 in the opening round and 2-over 74 in the final round to finish with a two-day score of 142, finishing four strokes ahead of Drew's Elliot Parker. The Delhi, New York native carded seven birdies across the two rounds and Philion's opening-round score of 68 tied for the second-lowest single round in program history. Philion's two-round total of 142 also tied for the second-lowest 36-hole total in program history. The tournament victory was the first of Philion's career. His seven birdies were tied for the second-most in the tournament. Philion also tied for third with 22 pars.
  • The Leaderboard: York was awarded the team title via tiebreaker (lowest total dropped scores between the two rounds) after tying with both Stevens and Eastern with a two-round team score of 607. Stevens' two-round score is tied for the 10th-lowest 36-hole total in program history. The Ducks' final-round score of 308 marked the lowest round by any team in the field by four strokes.

The Finishes
  • First-year Austin Liao was the Ducks' second finisher, carding a 152 to tie for 10th place. The Warren, New Jersey native was consistent across the two rounds, finishing with a 75 in the opening round and a 77 in the second. He finished with four birdies. 
  • Sophomore Eduardo Terlaje finished three shots behind Liao, tying for 16th with a two-round score of 155. The Yona, Guam native carded a 78 in the opening round and then improved by one stroke in the final round, firing a 77. He finished with two birdies, each in the opening round, and his 21 pars tied for fourth.
  • Senior Eegan McDermott (+16) and junior Gus Vickers (+19) rounded out the Ducks' contingent. The East Brunswick, New Jersey native eagled the par-5 eighth hole Tuesday, one of just 12 eagles carded across the entire tournament. 
  • As a team, the Ducks totaled 19 birdies and one eagle.

Up Next
  • Golf has a quick turnaround, returning to the course on April 13 for the single-day Knights Invitational, hosted by Arcadia University at the Makefield Highlands Golf Club.
