HOBOKEN, N.J. & NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 12-13, 2024) – Junior
Ryan Ward took second place in the 200-yard backstroke, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's and women's swimming teams fell in a split dual to nationally-ranked New York University.
The first nine events for each gender took place at the DeBaun Aquatic Center Friday, while the final events took place at the Palladium Natatorium Saturday. NYU won the men's dual by a score of 264-51, while the Violet women won via a 266-49 margin.
Ward reached the wall of the 200 Back in a time of 1:59.20 to finish second out of the seven swimmers. First-year
Nick Croghan took fifth in the same race with a time of 2:05.86. Ward continues to hold the top spot in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) in the distance with his mark of 1:53.56 set at the TCNJ Invitational.
In addition to Ward's second-place finish, the Ducks totaled four third-place finishes. Junior
Kai Wong finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.80, while senior
Keenan Yates was third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.02 seconds. Additionally, sophomore
Will Stibor placed third in the men's 50 Free with a time of 22.27 seconds, out-touching NYU's Damian Baranowski by less the nine-hundredths-of-a-second. Graduate student
Derick Miller had the Ducks' final third-place finish, reaching the wall in 52.13 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. Wong remains second in the MAC in the 100 Back (59.06 seconds), while Miller remains atop the conference in the 100 Fly (50 seconds).
NYU swept the top two spots in all 28 events in moving to 3-0 in both genders. NYU men are ranked third in the country according to the latest College Swimming and Division Coaches Association of America, while the women are fourth.
Around the Middle Atlantic Conference
- Arcadia met FDU-Florham in a dual on Friday, Jan. 12. Arcadia's men squad topped the Devils, 121-40, while also winning 102-96 on the women's side.
- Stevenson hosted Lebanon Valley and Juniata in a triangular at the Rosenberg Aquatic Center. The men's squad topped both Lebanon Valley (136-65) and Juniata (155-12) and the Mustangs also won twice on the women's side, besting Lebanon Valley 116-75 and Juniata 132-60.
- Hood traveled to McDaniel for a dual and came away with a pair of victories. The men's squad won by the score of 178-62, while the women's team won 119-114. Prior to this weekend, Hood and York met in a dual on Jan. 6, with the Spartans winning both ends of the meet – 166.5-72.5 on the men's side and 131-90 on the women's.
- King's traveled to former MAC school, Lycoming, and won 100-55 on the men's side, but fell 92-33 on the women's.
- Misericordia traveled to Scranton, Pennsylvania for a quad dual hosted by Marywood. Misericordia's men's team won all three duals, topping Marywood 189-58, Wilkes 191-56 and St. Mary's (Md.) 147-106. The Cougars also swept the duals on the women's side, besting Marywood 217-31, Wilkes 220-25 and St. Mary's (Md.) 199-60.
- Widener hosted Immaculata on Jan. 12 and swept the dual, with the men winning 136-38 and the women finishing on the right side of a 148-39 score.
- Messiah and Dickinson competed this weekend in a home-and-home series. Messiah's men dropped both ends of the consecutive meets by the score of 128-71 on Friday and 118-66 Saturday. Conversely, Messiah's women swept the duals, winning Friday by the score of 127-77 and 126-60 Saturday.
- Albright and York were off this weekend.

- Stevens Swimming returns to the pool one week from today for a dual against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The dual gets underway at 1 p.m. and prior to the first race, Stevens will honor its Class of 2024. The meet will serve as the program's home finale for the 2023-24 season.
