Men's Swimming Drops Home Finals to the United States Merchant Marine Academy

The Ducks are 0-9 all-time against the Mariners.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 20, 2024) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) 168-89 Saturday afternoon inside the DeBaun Aquatic Center.

The Ducks have never beaten the Mariners, as they are 0-9 all-time. The 168 points are the second-most they have given up all-time against USMMA.

Stevens celebrated senior day, honoring seniors Douglas Sousa and Phong Tran.

Top Performers

  • Junior Edward Platonov swam 1:48.11 in the 200-yard freestyle, which placed him first in the competition. He also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. The junior was also a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay that placed first.
  • Junior Ryan Ward placed in the second spot in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:00.77.
  • Sophomore Deo Bove placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.13 and second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:05.03. He also placed third in the 200-yard butterfly.
  • Sophomore Will Stibor finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 22:02.
  • Sophomore Lukas Mikulenas came in second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.87.
  • Stevens claimed the top three spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team consisted of Platonov, graduate student Derick Miller and juniors Will Stibor and Cade Cermak.
  • Stibor, Bove, Miller, and junior Jack Martinek came in second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.00.
  • Miller and Martinek came in second and third in the 100-yard butterfly, respectively.

For the Opponents

  • Teague Mayer won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.24 seconds and was part of the 200-yard medley relay team to place first.
  • Joseph DeCarlo won the 200-yard butterfly and also was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team.
