Quartet of Victories Not Enough For No. 14 Wrestling; No. 16 Loras Takes Neutral Site Dual, 23-15

La Crosse, Wis. – Carmen Cortese remained unbeaten on the year and Blaise Wagner picked up a technical fall victory, but the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team, No. 14 in the latest OpenMat team dual rankings, fell to No. 16 Loras College (Iowa) in a neutral site dual Thursday night, 23-15.

The Rundown
  • After winning the 149 lb. bracket at the season-opening Ned McGinley Invitational on November 2, then picking up a technical fall win in the Delaware Valley dual last Friday, Cortese earned a 14-4 majority decision win.
  • Wagner, who garnered Stevens' quickest pin against Delaware Valley, needed just three minutes to close out a 19-4 technical fall Thursday.
  • Luke Hoerle, wrestling at 141 for the first time after a late scratch, showed much of the same prowess that earned him a No. 5 ranking at 133 with an 8-3 decision win over Jalen Schropp, No.13 at 141 in the latest rankings.
  • Chris Stathopoulos knocked off Dustin Bohren, an All-American last season and OpenMat's No. 4 wrestler at 165, by a 4-1 decision.
  • In a battle between two top-10 ranked competitors in their weight class, Eric Kinkaid picked up three points for the Duhawks with a 4-2 decision win over Ryan Smith.

  • Cortese, Stathopoulos, and Wagner all improved to 2-0 in duals this season.
  • Hoerle picked up career win number 86, the second-most on the team, trailing only Martsinovsky (95).

From the Mat (Head Coach Anthony Bonaventura)
"Not the result we wanted but overall our effort as a team was solid. Lost some tough matches but I thought we were aggressive. We just need to capitalize on our offense better. Happy for Chris Stathopoulos, big win over a returning All-American. Quick turnaround for us, excited to get back at it on Saturday at the Auggie Invitational."

Up Next
  • Stevens will remain in the Midwest for the Augsburg University Invitational this Saturday, November 16. The team returns to Canavan Arena next Saturday, November 23 for a home-opening quad meet with Ursinus, Castleton State, and Roanoke.
