No. 21 Wrestling Rallies For 30-21 Road Victory Over No. 24 Delaware Valley

Doylestown, Pa. – The #21 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team erased an early 16-point deficit with six straight wins, including two falls, for a 30-21 victory over #24 Delaware Valley in the first dual meet of the 2024-25 season for each side.

After dropping the first four matches between the two schools from 2009 through 2014, Stevens has now won the last six dating back to 2016.

The Rundown
  • Delaware Valley took an early 16-0 lead with a pair of technical falls at 125 and 141, and a fall at 133.
  • Carmen Cortese put five points on the board for the Ducks with a 19-4 technical fall at 149. Cortese took the lead with a takedown about 1:15 into the match and grew the lead to 6-1, then 12-3, and secured the win with another takedown just past the midway point of the second period.
  • Down 3-0 less than a minute into his match at 157, Ryan Smith recovered to grab a 4-3 lead by the end of the opening period. The lead ballooned to 10-3 by the end of the second period, with Smith eventually closing out the majority decision win 15-4, pulling Stevens back within seven, 16-9.
  • As was the case with Smith, Chris Stathopoulos went down three points early in his match at 165, but recovered for a 4-3 lead heading to the second period. Starting the period in bottom position, Stathopoulos escaped, secured a takedown, and earned a near fall all in less than a minute, extending his lead to 12-3, which grew to 14-3 with another near fall near the end of the period. Stathopoulos closed out the tech fall win with two more credited takedowns in the third period, shrinking the deficit to just two, 16-14.
  • Harrison Hinojosa posted a dominant 9-2 first period in his match at 174, eventually taking a 10-3 decision win, putting Stevens in front, 17-16.
  • Joel Martsinovsky and Blaise Wagner posted back-to-back falls at 184 and 197, respectively. Martsinovsky was one point from a technical fall win when he closed out his 95th career victory in 2:25. Wagner followed with a match-clinching, quickest-pin-of-the-night for the Ducks in 1:25.
  • Delaware Valley's Logan Flynn secured the final points of the night with a technical fall win at 285.

Top Performers
  • The 149-pound winner at last weekend's Ned McGinley Invitational, Cortese ran his record for the year to 6-0 and picked up his 30th collegiate win in the process.
