Vickers Claims Another Individual Title With Win at the DeSales Spring Invitational

The senior was the only golfer under par in the field.

NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. (April 23, 2024) – Senior Gus Vickers posted a 1-under 71 to earn his second win of the spring as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team finished second at the DeSales Spring Invitational. The tournament was played at the Olde Homestead Golf Club (6,419 yards – par 72).

Vickers topped 49 other golfers to earn the victory. Sophomore Brock Dickson and first-year Maxime Debets also had solid outings, as the two each shot 75's to finish tied for third. Muhlenberg's Alex McCauley shot a 2-over 74 to claim second, while Delaware Valley's John Brennan and Drew's Ray Kim and Ryan Ricci came in third with Dickson and Debets to round out the top five.

As a team, the Ducks finished with a score of 304, finishing just one stroke behind the team champions Drew. There was a big drop off from there, as Muhlenberg (319), Delaware Valley (323) and Lebanon Valley (326) all finished inside the top five.

The Rundown

  • Vickers carded five birdies in his round, which was the second most in the field behind only fellow teammate Brock Dickson. Vickers started the day by making birdie on the first hole, as well as the third to put him 2-under early. He also ended his round on a high note by making birdie on 18. He finished 3-under on the par 5's.
  • Coming off of his second career top 10 finish, Debets added a third to his tally with a 3-over 75. Like Vickers, Debets made birdie on the first and was 2-under after five. The first-year was 1-under on the par 5's and even on the par 3's for the round.
  • Dickson also finished in a top three spot for the Ducks. He made six birdies, which was the most of any golfer in the field. The sophomore also found success on the par 5's, as he finished 3-under on the long holes. He also made four birdies on the back nine. Only four other players in the field made a total of four birdies in their entire round.
  • First-year Sebastian Beaver carded a 11-over 83 today. He made just one birdie, as he scored a four on the par 5 16th.
  • Sophomore Austin Liao rounded out the scores for the Ducks. He shot 42 on each side to finish with a 12-over 84. He birdied the second and 17th holes.

  • Brennan shot a 36 on the back nine.

  • King's came in third in a tri-match against Scranton and Wilkes.
  • Delaware Valley tied for third at the Muhlenberg Spring Invitational on Monday.
  • DeSales came in fifth at the Muhlenberg Spring Invitational.
  • At this tournament, Delaware Valley finished fourth, Lebanon Valley came in fifth, DeSales finished sixth, Arcadia finished seventh, FDU-Florham came in eighth, Arcadia came in ninth, and Misericordia finished tenth.

  • The big one is up next as the Ducks will compete in the MAC Freedom Championship from April 27-28. Tee times are TBD. It will be contested at Olde Homestead Golf Club in New Tripoli, Pa., which was also the site for today's tournament. Gus Vickers is looking to win his third consecutive MAC Freedom Individual Title, while the team as a whole aims for their fourth consecutive MAC Freedom Championship.
