Men's Golf Completes First Round at NCAA Tournament

Vickers led the Ducks with a 5-over 77.

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (May 14, 2024) – Senior Gus Vickers shot a 5-over 77 as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team sits T-40th after day one at the NCAA Tournament. The opening round of the tournament was played at the Legacy Golf Club (7,077 yards – par 72).

Emory's Jackson Klutznick leads the field after shooting 8-under in the first round. He had six birdies and an eagle. Washington & Lee's Jonathan McEwen sits one back at 7-under. Michael O'Sullivan (Oglethorpe), Griffin Pohl (Illinois Wesleyan), and Chase Watts (Methodist) round out the top five at 6-under. 

As a team, the Ducks finished with a score of 316 after the first day. They sit in a tie for 40th with Springfield. 43 teams earned a bid to the tournament. Methodist University sits in first place at 17-under after day one. Emory sits one back in second place, while Redlands is in third place at 13-under.

The Rundown

  • Vickers paced the Ducks as he sits in tie for 147th. He made one birdie on each nine, as he cashed in on the ninth and the 17th. He also added ten pars.
  • First-year Sebastian Beaver shot a 7-over 79 in his first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He made just one birdie on the day, coming on the par-5 17th. His back nine was much better than the front, as he shot just 1-over on the final nine holes.
  • First-year and MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year Maxime Debets made three birdies on day one to lead the Ducks. He scored under par on the par-5 fifth, the par-4 seventh, and the par-5 17th.
  • Sophomore Austin Liao shot an 8-over 80 on day one. Despite making no birdies, he eagled the par-5 ninth hole. He was one of just 21 players to make an eagle on day one of the tournament.
  • Sophomore Brock Dickson shot a 8-over 80 to round out the scores for the Ducks. He made two birdies on the day as he carded a three on the par-4 13th and a four on the par-5 17th.

  • St. John's (MN) was 6-under on the par 4's on day one. That mark was four better than any other team.
  • Methodist led the field with five eagles.
