Elizabethtown, Pa. – Four wrestlers earned top-six finishes in their weight classes as the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team, No. 18 in the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Tournament Team rankings, took sixth at the Elizabethtown College-hosted Ken Ober Invitational on Saturday, January 25.
Ian Flanagan won his first four matches and made the finals at 174 as the No. 7 seed;
Jack Bailey made the top four at 165;
Branden Bulatao gave the Ducks two top-five finishers at 174, and
George Pavis took sixth at 149.
The Rundown & Top Performers
- Flanagan's day began with a 12-9 decision win and a 16-0 technical fall victory, putting him in the bracket semifinals. After a win by sudden victory, the sophomore's quest for the top spot was thwarted with a loss to the draw's top seed, Xavier Preston of Roanoke.
- Bailey, the team leader in falls coming into the day's action, added two more in his first two matches of the day, including his fourth sub-1:00 pin of the season. The senior's day ended with a decision loss in the semifinals and sudden victory loss in the consolation draw.
- In the non-Flanagan half of the bracket at 174, Bulatao advanced to the semifinals with a fall, then a 12-5 decision victory. After a decision loss to the top-seeded Preston, Bulatao picked up a fall in 0:27 in the fifth-place contest, the team's quickest pin of the season.
- Unseeded at 149, Pavis ran into the top-seeded Mike Glynn of RIT in his first match, sending him to the consolation draw, where the first-year reeled off wins by technical fall, major decision, pin, and decision, guaranteeing himself at least a top-six finish, before falling by decision in his final match of the day.
- Justin Ciliotta picked up three wins at 149, including a fall and a technical fall; Tyler Roe, Giorgio Corica, and Peter Grippo picked up a pin apiece; Ben Rosa picked up a pair of decision wins, and Joseph Bodnar earned a technical fall win.
