Madison, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team went a perfect 3-0 at the Drew University Club Invitational on Sunday.
The Ducks topped Rutgers University (16-11), Bryn Mawr College (23-4), and the University of Virginia (23-4), while also facing host Drew University in a scrimmage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the win over the Scarlet Knights, Stevens collected seven victories each at foil and epee and added two at sabre.
Akemi Rodriguez went a perfect 3-0 at foil, while
Emily Zgombic (2-0) and
Julia DiPaolo (2-1) contributed the other four wins.
Grace Hicks was unbeaten at epee with a 3-0 record, while
Sofia Stoeckel and
Elyse Sato each tallied two victories.
Ashlyn Leung was the lone victor at sabre, finishing 2-1.
Against Bryn Mawr, Leung and
Anastasia Mose each posted 3-0 marks as the Ducks claimed a 6-3 decision in sabre. Epee went a flawless 9-0, with Hicks and newcomers
Madyson Gavilanes and
Katherine Mooney each finishing 3-0. Rodriguez followed up her 3-0 performance versus Rutgers with another perfect showing against the Owls. DiPaolo also went 3-0, while Zgombic added two wins at foil.
Stevens went 8-1 at foil against Virginia. Rodriguez and DiPaolo each turned in 3-0 records, with Zgombic and
Selita Ikejibeh adding one victory apiece. Epee posted a 6-3 result, led by three wins from Hicks. Stoeckel went 2-1, while Gavilanes rounded out the scoring with a 1-1 mark.

The Ducks return to the strips next weekend, competing in the two-day Coach Nikki Franke Classic, hosted by Temple University, beginning Saturday.
