Women's Fencing Competes at Coach Nikki Franke Classic

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team competed at the Coach Nikki Franke Classic on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (FOIL)
In foil, Emily Zgombic, Julia DiPaolo and Akemi Rodriguez each went 2-2 in pool play. Zgombic earned wins over Teagan Lowerie of NJIT and Alissa Cullen of Wagner and recorded 13 touches. DiPaolo topped Rita Wang of Wagner and Grace Wong of Florida, registering 12 touches. Rodriguez knocked off Gabrielle Como of FDU and Sierra Friday of Wagner while posting 11 touches.
 
In the tableau, Zgombic fell 15-7 to Temple's Jara Delcura, Rodriguez was upended by Bethany Lee of Johns Hopkins, and DiPaolo was bested 15-5 by Zhiyan Qian of North Carolina.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SABRE)
Anastasia Mose notched two victories in Pool 3, topping Randa Shalabi of NJIT and Meya Colin of FDU. Mose tallied 11 touches over her five bouts, while Ashlyn Leung also competed at sabre. Leung finished with nine touches and one win, defeating Echo Miller of Florida. In the tableau, Leung matched up against Fanny Straub of Wagner in the first round but was knocked off 15-7, while Mose fell 15-4 to Lila Paul of Penn.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (EPEE)
Sofia Stoeckel and Grace Hicks powered the epee group, each registering three victories in pool play. Stoeckel went 3-2 with 18 touches, knocking off Catarina Nguyen of Florida, Jade Burnett of FDU and Emily Varhaul of Drew. Hicks went 3-1 in Pool 4, finishing second in the group with a +8 touch differential after topping Nina Prihodko of NYU, Lillian Pinckney of Swarthmore and Maria Fernanda Lopez Meneses of Wagner.
 
Katherine Mooney went 2-3 in Pool 2 with 18 touches, upending Jennifer Guenzel of Rowan and Alisha Bourhill-Tumser of Drew. Madyson Gavilanes earned a win over Veronica Obler of Bryn Mawr and finished with 12 touches, while Elyse Sato added a win against Tia Goodson of Rowan with nine touches over four bouts.
 
In the tableau, Gavilanes won her first-round match, upending Emily Faktor of the Temple Club Team 15-13 before falling 15-7 to top seed Yeva Mazur of Duke. Mooney was a winner in her first matchup, clipping Georginna Harpole of Swarthmore 15-12 before falling to Tallulah Nguyen of Boston College. Hicks earned a bye into the second round but dropped a 15-10 decision to Tatiana Zafft of North Carolina. Like Hicks, Stoeckel entered the tableau in the second round but fell 15-10 to Dilinna Oraedu of Rutgers. Sato was the final entrant and fell 15-4 to Sophia Abashidze of Penn State.
