Salt Lake City, Utah – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team competed at the prestigious North American Cup over the weekend.
The four-day event, which spanned Friday through Monday, featured
Grace Hicks (Division I Épée),
Julia DiPaolo (Junior Women's Foil), and newcomers
Elyse Sato and
Madyson Gavilanes (Junior Women's Épée).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Competing in Pool 1 in épée, Hicks tallied victories over Youshan Shu and Katherine Nemeth, recording 22 touches across six bouts. Advancing to the tableau ranked 140th, Hicks faced Serena Jiang in the opening round and bowed out after a 15-7 setback. DiPaolo competed in Pool 30 in foil, registering 11 touches, but did not advance to the elimination rounds.
Sato and Gavilanes made their Stevens debuts in Junior Women's Épée on Saturday. Sato collected two victories in Pool 32, defeating Minju Cho and Livia Yu while scoring 18 touches over seven bouts. She finished tied for 189th and was matched against Navya Needlam in the bracket, where she fell 15-8. Gavilanes tallied 13 touches in pool play to open her collegiate career.
