Newtown, Pa. – Senior
Ethan Hagen was named MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year, one of eight Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer student-athletes named All-Conference on Thursday, as revealed by the league office as part of its annual year-end awards announcement.
Hagen was joined on the first team by forward
Matthew Murillo, midfielders
Brian Babovic &
Emerson Kekesi, and goalkeeper
Sebastian Montoulieu. Defender
Martin Fields was named to the Second Team while forward
Lucas Mendes and defender
Thomas Smith earned Honorable Mention status.
Named to the MACF Second Team following the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Hagen continued to raise his game leading up to and through the conference tournament. The senior started 15 of the team's 16 matches, averaging more than 85 minutes in those contests, playing all 90 minutes 10 times. He scored his first collegiate goal in a win over NYU, adding another goal and two assists in conference play while simultaneously holding 11 teams throughout the year to one goal or fewer. He also tacked on MAC Freedom Tournament MVP honors after All-Conference voting had concluded.
Murillo averaged less than 40 minutes during his 15 appearances during the regular season, but made that time count, tying for second on the team in goals (three) and points (nine). The sophomore scored a tie-breaking goal against NYU, the Ducks' lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Alvernia, and put a stamp on his regular season proficiency with a three-point performance against DeSales.
Second Team All-Conference in 2024, Babovic, like Hagen, proved a pivotal two-way piece for the conference regular season and tournament champs in 2025, consistently stopping scoring threats for the opposition while initiating them for the Ducks, registering an assist on the eventual game-winning goal against Arcadia.
Kekesi started the year with just one goal in his first six appearances, but went on a memorable tear late, scoring eight goals in eight matches leading up to the MAC Freedom Tournament, including braces against Kean and Delaware Valley, and a hat trick against DeSales – with a goal in the MAC Freedom semifinals against Misericordia, he also became just the third Duck since 2016 with at least 10 goals in a season.
Montoulieu finished the regular season with a pair of shutouts, a goals-against average just over 1.00, and a save percentage just under .700. The Northeastern grad transfer stopped two of three penalty shots he faced, recorded at least three saves seven times, then for good measure, posted back-to-back shutouts in the MAC Freedom Tournament, adding five more saves.
Fields made 14 appearances with 13 starts, playing the full 90 seven times, six of those coming in consecutive appearances, including a conference battle with Misericordia where Fields scored a 73
rd-minute equalizer in an eventual 1-1 tie with a Cougars team the Ducks would blank 3-0 in the conference tournament semifinal less than three weeks later.
Despite being on the field just 763 of a possible 1,440 minutes during the season, Mendes tied Murillo for second on the team in goals and points. The first-year handed out three assists in back-to-back appearances against Manhattanville and Swarthmore, then scoring in back-to-back matches against New Paltz and Kean, adding a tying goal in an eventual 3-2 comeback win over FDU-Florham.
Smith missed three matches due to injury in the middle of the season but made his presence felt both before and after. He played the full 90 and scored late equalizers in back-to-back draws with Swarthmore and TCNJ, helped the Ducks got 4-1 in their last five regular season matches, then played 174 of a possible 180 minutes as the Ducks posted clean sheets in both MAC Freedom Tournament matches.
After winning a fifth straight MAC Freedom Tournament title last Saturday (1-0 over Lebanon Valley), the team begins NCAA Tournament action at Brandeis on Saturday at 1:30 in the first ever clash between the teams.. Live video and stat links will be posted on StevensDucks.com as they are made available.
