PRINCETON, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology senior wrestler
Ryan Smith placed sixth at 157 pounds against Division I competition at the Princeton Open on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After opening his day with a decision loss to Joe Antonio of Army West Point, the three-time All-American Smith fell just a point shy of a technical fall win in a 14-0 major decision victory over Dylan Zenion of Hofstra, including two takedowns and a two-point near-fall.
Following a win via forfeit, Smith picked up two 4-1 wins via sudden victory, first over Princeton's Rocco Camillaci, then over Oregon State's Joel Adams, putting Smith in the consolation semis.
With a 4-2 decision win over Rider's James Farina after a second period takedown, Smith found himself in the fifth-place match with Lock Haven's Nick Stampoulos, where he dropped a 2-1 decision.
Smith became the 10
th Duck to place in the top six in competition this weekend, following the nine who did so at the Ned McGinley Invitational on Saturday.
