Garden City, N.Y. – Nine members of the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team finished in the top five of their respective weight classes at the Nassau Open on Saturday, including two each at 125, 133, and 197 pounds.
Competing for the first time in nearly a month,
Gabriel Hargrove took first place at 133 pounds,
James McGinty (125) and
Cole Grenier (197) took third in their respective classes,
Chris Piazza (174),
Terrence Thomas (197), &
Ben Rosa (285) each finished fourth respectively, and
Brendan Schuler (125),
Naci Robinson (133), &
Kristian Koroveshi (184) all finished fifth in their brackets.
The Rundown
- Hargrove finished his day 4-0 with a pin and three decisions, picking up 10 takedowns in his decision wins, plus two more prior to securing the fall
- McGinty finished the day 4-1 in his first competition as a Duck, pinning his first opponent, adding a dominant 11-0 major decision, and a 4-2 decision win over his teammate Schuler
- Grenier picked up four wins, two via pin, capping his day with a third-place match decision win over Thomas, who came into that bout with three straight pins, all three in less than two minutes, including two in less than 50 seconds
- Piazza collected four wins on Saturday, including three by first period pin, plus a 14-7 decision victory
- Rosa picked up a pair of wins, one a 7-1 decision, the other a pin in less than 75 seconds
- Schuler won two of his first three matches via decision, then posted a dominant 21-3 technical fall. After falling to McGinty, the first-year ended his day with an 11-4 decision win
- Robinson's day began with a technical fall victory. After suffering a loss via fall, the senior rebounded with wins via major decision and decision, conceding just three points across the two matches while picking up two takedowns in each contest
- Koroveshi, after five weeks away from competition, needed fewer than two rounds to earn a technical fall victory in his first match of the day. After securing a fall in less than 75 seconds, Koroveshi bounced back from losses via decision and pin, closing his day with a last-second pin
- In addition, George Pavis (149) won four matches, Sidney Dillon (141), Adam Ramadan (141), Logan Levine (149), Michael O'Connor (157), Bodhi Mccormack (165) all won three matches, and Joseph Bodnar (149), Raffaele Fonte (149), Andrew O'Reilly (157) all won two
