Chicago, Ill. -- The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team tied their dual with the University of Chicago, 21-21, on Thursday night, but won six of the 10 matches contested, coming away with the victory via tiebreaker.
Charles Piccione,
Nico Diaz,
Cole Handlovic,
Ryan Smith,
Ian Flanagan, and
Noah MacIlroy all picked up wins for the Ducks, No. 14 in the latest OpenMat Team Dual rankings, who survived a trio of pins by the Maroons, No. 20 in the OpenMat rankings.
The Rundown
- Piccione opened the dual with a takedown in all three periods en route to an 11-2 major decision victory at 125 pounds
- After Chicago picked up its first pin of the night at 133, Diaz (141) and Handlovic (149) each picked up first period takedowns in their decision victories, Diaz winning 5-2 and Handlovic winning 5-4
- Smith made it three straight wins with perhaps the most dominating performance of the night, picking up seven takedowns in the first period during a 21-6 technical fall at 157 pounds
- The Maroons collected their second pin of the dual at 165 pounds, but Ian Flanagan kept the Ducks in front with an 11-4 decision win at 174 on the strength of two first period takedowns
- MacIlroy put the Ducks on the cusp of the win with two second period takedowns, adding another in the third for good measure during a 12-5 decision win at 184
- After Chicago garnered their third fall at 197, Noah Berlin-Langston needed a win OR to hold Chicago to nothing more than a decision win at heavyweight, and the first-year did just that, as the Maroons tied the score at 21, but the Ducks came out the beneficiaries of the tiebreaker
NOTES OF NOTE
- In all, the Ducks picked up 19 takedowns while conceding just 10
For the Opponents
- Jackson Rustad (133), Daniel Gunlogson (165), and Gunnar Garriques (197) picked up the pins for the Maroons
