Milwaukee, Wis. – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team finished in 2nd place at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational on Saturday with eight competitors placing in the top six of their respective weight classes, including five top-four finishers.
Nico Diaz (141) and
Noah MacIlroy (184) ran through their respective draws, each going 4-0 AND doing so with one pin, technical fall, major decision, and decision victory each.
Ryan Smith took second place at 157 pounds,
Tyler Roe placed third at 165 pounds, and
Dom Marinilli finished fourth at 133, rounding out the Ducks' quintet of top-four finishers.
Charles Piccione (125) &
Cole Grenier (197) each took fifth in their respective draws and
Cole Handlovic took sixth at 149 pounds, rounding out Stevens' podium finishers.
The Ducks nipped the host Raiders (130 points) for second, with Augsburg (15 National Championships since 1991) winning the event after tabulating 158.5 points.
The Rundown
- Diaz lived up to his No. 1 seeding, pinning his first opponent in less than two minutes, then outpointing his final three opponents 35-7, collecting nine takedowns in those three matches
- The No. 3 seed at 184, MacIlroy's day also began with a sub-2:00 fall. After collecting nine total takedowns in a 20-3 tech fall and 17-9 major decision, MacIlroy picked up a first-period takedown against No. 1 Jackson Hughes of MSOE, riding that to a 5-3 decision win.
- Smith's day as the No. 1 seed at 157 began with two technical falls, a pin, and a decision victory before falling by major decision in the final to the draw's No. 2 seed, Cole Dummer of Augsburg
- No. 20 Roe was knocked to the consolation bracket with a decision loss against the No. 5 seed in his second bout of the day, but responded with a second technical fall, a pin, and a decision win over No. 3 Brady Brewick of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
- Marinilli's run as the No. 5 seed began with a pin and decision win. After falling via decision to No. 1 Connor Krueger of St John's (MN), Marinilli collected a major decision, before falling in the third-place match via another decision
- Also the No. 5 seed at 125, Piccione picked up a pair of decisions to start his day. Like Marinilli, Piccione then fell via decision to the draw's No. 1 seed but capped his day with a major decision in the fifth-place match, picking up two four-point near falls in the third period.
- The 11th seed at 197, Grenier went technical fall, pin, sudden victory in his first three bouts. After falling to the draw's No. 2 seed, Grenier's day ended with a second win via fall.
- Handlovic, No. 1 at 149, outpointed his first three opponents 56-11 while collecting three technical fall victories, but was unable to continue beyond that, forfeiting his remaining bouts.
- Additionally, Ian Flanagan (174) won four matches, Justin Ciliotta (149) & Noah Berlin-Langston (HWT) each won three matches, and Sawyer Pugh (174) won two matches,
