Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon.
The Ducks (3-6) fell to the Panthers (3-3) by scores of 6-0 and 10-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In game one, Middlebury pitcher Justin Lessing and Stevens pitcher
Justin Doyle matched zeroes in the first inning, each striking out three batters. The Panthers broke through in the second, scoring two runs on a groundout and an RBI triple to left-center. Senior
Liam DeRubertis recorded Stevens' first hit of the game with a single down the left-field line. He stole second but was left stranded.
Doyle worked a clean third inning, striking out the final two batters.
Evan Pravato drew a walk with one out in the bottom half and stole second but was unable to advance further. Middlebury extended its lead with a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout and added two more in the fifth.
Frank Tonina notched the Ducks' first extra-base hit with a double to left-center but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a triple.
The Panthers capped the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single to left. Stevens threatened in the seventh, loading the bases after
Quinton Sterling led off with a single, DeRubertis walked, and
Colby Ching singled to right. However, Middlebury escaped unscathed as the final three Ducks batters struck out, securing the shutout victory.
In game two, Middlebury broke a scoreless tie with a five-run second inning. A pair of two-run hits and three walks against starter
Jonah Swarts proved costly. The Panthers added two unearned runs in the third, scoring on a double play and an infield single.
Middlebury continued to add on, with Kevin McCausland launching a solo home run to center field in the fourth. Stevens had a prime scoring opportunity in the fifth, loading the bases after
Aaron Wong was hit by a pitch and both Pravato and
Victor Schilleci drew walks, but a groundout ended the inning. DeRubertis and
Kieran O'Brien tallied singles in the sixth but were unable to cross the plate.
The Ducks again loaded the bases in the eighth when
Eli Somers singled, DeRubertis doubled down the left-field line, and Ching walked. However, O'Brien popped out to first, and Wong followed with a pop-up to second, leaving the runners stranded. Middlebury tacked on two more runs in the ninth on a pair of walks before retiring the Ducks in order to close out the game.
