Jersey City, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team set a school record for runs in a game as they routed New Jersey City University 27-6 on Tuesday.
The 27 runs for Stevens (20-11) surpassed the previous high of 26, set against Yeshiva on February 26, 2012, and Mount Saint Vincent on April 5, 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Stevens erupted for five runs in the second.
Jack Reichlin led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on an error.
Kieran O'Brien singled him home before
Aaron Wong followed with a single. After a caught stealing and groundout, Victory Schilleci was hit by a pitch, and
Eli Somers walked to load the bases.
Dylan Fishbough singled through the left side to make it 2-0 before
Liam DeRubertis followed with a base hit up the middle.
Chip Krese capped the inning with a two-run single to left.
NJCU got one back on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second, but Stevens answered with five more in the third. Schilleci drove in a run with a groundout, and Fishbough launched a triple to left, plating two. DeRubertis then blasted a two-run homer to right, extending the lead to 10-1. William Sotiropoulous entered in the bottom half and, after walking the leadoff man, induced a 1-6-4 double play to end the frame.
Stevens added a run on a passed ball in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a pair of errors. In the sixth, the Ducks scored five more. After two quick strikeouts, Schilleci was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive. Somers walked, and Fishbough singled to left to score Schilleci.
Robert Savely was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Krese delivered a grand slam to push the lead to 18-1.
NJCU scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Stevens tacked on six more in the seventh.
Cooper Poggioli led off with a single, and walks to Wong and
Evan Pravato loaded the bases. Schilleci and
Drew DiSanto each drew bases-loaded walks to bring in runs. A Fishbough hit to the outfield caused a collision between the center and right fielders, allowing another run to score. With the bases still loaded, Reichlin smashed a double to left, clearing the bases. The Ducks polished off their scoring in the eighth, with DiSanto, Fishbough, and Savely stringing together three straight RBI hits. NJCU added three in the bottom of the ninth, but
Connor Herlihy struck out the final batter to end the game.
