ANNVILLE, Pa. – Stevens Institute of Technology wrestler
Luke Hoerle, men's basketball player
Jack Spellman, and men's swimmer
Edward Platonov were all named Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Senior Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the league office.
Senior student-athletes (one each) from the nine winter sports (men's and women's basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's swimming, and men's wrestling) were recognized for their strong academic and athletic prowess.
Hoerle finished his final season of eligibility 17-6 with a second straight regional championship and an 8
th place finish at NCAA Championships. Hoerle also surpassed 100 wins for his career during the season and finished his time as a Duck with a win percentage greater than 75 percent.
Hoerle was a four-time MAC Academic Honor Roll selection and a five-time recipient of the NWCA Scholar All-American honor. The graduate student studied business and technology, accumulating a nearly unblemished 3.99 GPA.
The senior scholar-athlete honor is the latest for Spellman's postseason haul that included All-Conference, All-Region, All-District, and All-MET honors. Spellman averaged a double-double for the third time in his Stevens career this past season, posting 11.6 points and a career-high 12.8 rebounds per game, capping a remarkable four-year career by reaching a rare triple milestone: 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 300 blocks—an achievement accomplished by only seven known players in NCAA Division III history.
The Ducks' forward was as outstanding in the classroom as he was on the court, sporting a 3.66 GPA in the process of earning his degree in business & technology. He was recognized as a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District selection twice and was a multi-time honoree on the MAC Academic Honor Roll.
Platonov collected one All-MAC honor after another during his time at Stevens. He was named an All-MAC performer 28 times with 15 First Team selections, 12 Second Team selections, and one Third Team selection. His excellence in the pool was on display from his arrival in Hoboken, earning 2022 MAC Rookie of the Year honors and MAC Swimmer of the Year honors in 2023.
In addition to his high level of success in the pool, Platonov earned a 3.73 GPA while pursuing a mechanical engineering degree and earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team.
