Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a non-conference game to RV/RV Eastern Connecticut State, 11-2, on Monday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoreless through one, the Ducks broke through for an unearned run in the bottom of the second.
Chip Krese singled through the right side with one out and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. With
Jack Reichlin at the plate, Krese stole third, and as the throw sailed into left field, he scored easily to give Stevens a 1-0 lead.
Stevens doubled its lead in the third.
Kieran O'Brien worked a five-pitch walk and moved to second on a walk to
Victor Schilleci. After a pop-out,
Dylan Fishbough dropped a single into center, scoring
Aaron Wong, who had reached on a fielder's choice. The Warriors threatened in the fourth, putting two runners on with two outs, but Ducks starter
Jonah Swarts escaped the jam with a groundout to end the frame.
Eastern Connecticut State took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs. After back-to-back walks to open the inning, a bunt single loaded the bases. Ray Leonzi followed with a double just beyond the outstretched dive of Reichlin in right field. Two runs scored, but Reichlin recovered quickly to throw out a third runner at the plate. Leonzi later came around to score on a wild pitch and a throwing error, giving ECSU a 3-2 edge.
The visitors added three more runs with two outs in the sixth to go up 6-2, then combined for five additional tallies over the final two innings. The Ducks' best threat came in the seventh, when Reichlin and
Kevin Villares were both hit by pitches. However, ECSU ended the inning with a strikeout and a lineout to extinguish the scoring chance. The Warriors closed out the game by retiring the final eight Stevens hitters.
