Victor, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team sits in 30
th place after shooting a +23 during the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday.
Maxime Debets led the Ducks with a +1, 73, placing him tied for 17th after the opening round. No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan leads the field at +2, with John Carroll and Carleton tied for second at +6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sebastian Beaver got off to a hot start, going -2 through his first three holes. He opened the round with a birdie on the first hole and followed it up with another on the third. Debets led the Ducks through nine holes, carding a +1. After playing the first four holes at +3, the sophomore settled in and shot -2 over the final five holes of the front nine, highlighted by consecutive birdies on holes 8 and 9 heading into the turn.
Beaver sat one stroke behind Debets after nine, while
Ben Slicker carded a +3 on the front. Slicker was -1 through three, thanks to a birdie on the par-3 second hole. Both
Arav Tank and
Brock Dickson came in at +5 on the front nine, each registering a birdie—Tank on the par-5 sixth, and Dickson on the par-5 eighth.
Debets was +1 through the first three holes on the back nine. Despite opening with back-to-back bogeys, he rebounded with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole and followed that up with five straight pars from 13 to 17. His birdie on 12 was especially impressive, as he chipped out of a bunker to convert. He capped off his strong round with a fourth birdie of the day on the par-5 18th.
Beaver, who ran into trouble on the eighth hole, was tied with Debets at +2 through 13. Dickson was even through his first three holes on the back, notching a birdie on 11 and a par on 12. Slicker and Tank each made several pars early on the inward nine and matched each other with threes on the par-3 12th. Both players added birdies on 16, with Tank also recording a birdie on the par-3 17th.

Day Two of the NCAA Championships begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Tee times were adjusted due to expected inclement weather in the Upper New York area later in the day. Stevens will play at Midvale Country Club as they look to make the cut for the first time in program history.
