HOBOKEN, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology head wrestling coach
Anthony Bonaventura announced Tuesday that Cooper Pontelandolfo has been named assistant coach ahead of the 2025-26 season. Pontelandolfo completed a highly distinguished collegiate career at NYU this past Spring.
"I am excited to add Cooper Pontelandolfo to the wrestling staff and program," said Bonaventura. "I witnessed first-hand his transformation and impact at NYU for the last four years. He was an incredible competitor and showed tremendous success in the classroom. His experience at NYU will help him connect with our student-athletes and reach their goals, on and off the mat. I am confident in his abilities to be a great leader by example and help us continue our pursuit of being the best wrestling team in the country."
The first 4x NCAA All-American in NYU wrestling history, Pontelandolfo posted a 131-19 record between 157 and 165 pounds as a Violet, good for third in program history in wins. He won at least 30 matches all four years on the mats, including a 34-1 mark this past season when he captured University Athletic Association (UAA) and NCAA Regional Championships, ending his career with a second straight top-three and fourth straight top-six finish at NCAA National Championships.
Pontelandolfo was equally as remarkable in the classroom, earning National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American, College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District, and UAA Winter All-Academic distinction (three times each), as well as CSC Second Team Academic All-American status this past season.
"I am thrilled to join the coaching staff at Stevens as I transition from athlete to coach," said Pontelandolfo. "This program offers exceptional academic and athletic opportunities for their student-athletes. I am honored to be working with these incredible individuals and help them reach their goals, on and off the wrestling mat."
Pontelandolfo joins the Ducks as they begin the quest for a sixth straight regional championship next winter. Individually, alumni
Luke Hoerle (141 lbs) and
Chris Stathopoulos (165) and rising senior
Ryan Smith (157) captured regional titles, three of the six Ducks who competed at Nationals, where the team finished 18
th out of 74 competing schools.
