Reading, Pa. – Sidney Dillon (149),
Michael O'Connor (157), and
Sawyer Pugh (184) all won their respective weight classes, three of seven Top-3 finishers for the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team at the Alvernia-hosted Mideast Futures Event.
In addition to Dillon, O'Connor, and Pugh,
James McGinty took second at 125, and the trio of
Justin Ciliotta (149),
Chris Piazza (174), and
Terrence Thomas (197) all placed third.
Top to bottom, the Ducks collected a myriad of Top-5 finishes, with seven additional competitors finishing fourth or fifth.
The Rundown
- Dillon was utterly dominant, pinning all four of his opponents, two inside of two rounds, including a semi-final victory inside of 90 seconds
- O'Connor picked up wins four different ways, opening his day with a pin, then winning his quarterfinal match via technical fall, his semifinal by major decision, capping his day with a decision win in the final
- Pugh won all three of his matches by major decision, outpointing his opponents 48-14, picking up a dozen takedowns during the day
- McGinty fell one win shy of a fourth first-place finish for the Ducks, picking up a first-period pin and a 12-0 major decision
- Ciliotta opened his day with a major decision win followed by a major decision loss, but closed his day in style with two pins (both before the end of the second period), and a technical fall
- Piazza, like Ciliotta, suffered a defeat in his second match of the day, then reeled off three wins in a row, two by first-period pin, including his 3rd place match victory
- Thomas' day began with a close decision loss but ended with a win via fall and a 9-4 decision win in the 3rd place match
- Brendan Schuler and Gabriel Hargrove both finished fourth at 125 and 133, respectively, with Schuler picking up a win by technical fall and Hargrove collecting a first-period pin
- Among the five Ducks who finished in fifth place: Logan Levine earned a pin in just 36 seconds at 149, Bodhi Mccormack won two matches at 165 via fall (both before the end of the second period), KJ Honnig collected a decision win at 174 (and led another 17-4 when awarded a win via forfeit), Kristian Koroveshi won his 5th-place match with a first-period pin, and Ben Rosa picked up two wins at heavyweight, one by pin and one via sudden victory in his fifth-place match
