Port Charlotte, Fla. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored six runs across the seventh and eighth innings en route to a 12-8 triumph over Amherst College on Tuesday.
Vinnie Stigliano tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for Stevens (7-7) to earn the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks wasted little time, putting up a four-spot in the top of the first inning.
Chip Krese reached on an error to lead off the game before Edward (E.J.) Balewitz Jr. and
Adam Barrington each walked to load the bases.
Garret Wolf brought Krese home with a sacrifice fly before
Robert Savely drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Dylan Fishbough capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.
Amherst answered with five runs in the second, all with two outs, as all five tallies were unearned after the leadoff batter reached on an error.
Stevens regained the lead in the fifth, as Justin Zachary was hit by a pitch and Zitko reached on an error. A Stigliano single loaded the bases before
John Czernyk dropped a single into left field to tie the game at five. Krese then lofted a fly ball to left, scoring Zitko and giving Stevens a 6-5 advantage. Stigliano was aided by his defense in the fifth, as the infield turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Ducks added to their margin in the seventh. Fishbough roped a leadoff double to left and scored on a Stigliano single. Stigliano later came around on a
Quinton Sterling pinch-hit double and scored on an RBI single by Balewitz Jr. Wolf added another RBI on a sacrifice fly, while Balewitz capped the inning by scoring on an errant throw by the catcher during a double steal.
Stevens polished off the scoring in the eighth, as pinch-hitter
Ethan Simpson reached on a two-out error and stole second and third before scampering home on a bad throw to third.
The Mammoths made it interesting, cutting into the lead with three runs in the eighth. Wolf came on and got a groundout to third to close out the inning. The junior returned for the ninth and set Amherst down in order to seal the victory.
