Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored nine runs in the first three innings in a 12-4 win Wednesday night over Centenary at Dobbelaar Field.
How It Happened
The Ducks answered an early run from the Cyclones with a three-spot in the bottom of the first.
Chip Krese led off with a double, then stole third ahead of a
Tyler Wilke walk.
Quinton Sterling drove in Krese with a single to left, then after
Griffin Zitko walked to re-load the bases,
Ethan Simpson reached on a fielder's choice to second, scoring Wilke and Sterling, who came all the way around from second.
In a scoreless second for each side,
Veer Wadhwani, making his first career start, started a stellar 5-3 double play off a line drive to third base. Centenary scored twice in the third to tie the game, but Stevens (11-8) quickly took the lead back in aggressive fashion.
Wilke reached on a fielder's choice ahead of walks to Sterling and Zitko, loading the bases with one out. Next up stepped Simpson, who drove in Wilke and Sterling with a single to left. After Zitko and Simpson pulled off a double steal (with Zitko scoring and Simpson taking third on a throwing error), Simpson scored the fourth run of the inning on a passed ball.
Luke Mahala followed with a walk, then stole second and third ahead of a Wadhwani RBI single. After Wadhwani took second on a wild pitch,
John Czernyk doubled him home for the sixth and final run of the inning.
Both pitching staffs settled in after the third inning barrage from the Ducks, putting matching zeroes on the scoreboard from the fourth through the sixth inning.
Mahala answered a run from Centenary in the seventh with a tape-measure opposite field blast in the bottom of the inning. Sterling (RBI single) and Zitko (RBI double) added on in the bottom of the eighth for the final runs of the game.
