Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team overcame an early four-run deficit, knocking off Saint Joseph's – Long Island for their seventh straight win, 9-4, Tuesday afternoon from Dobbelaar Field.
How It Happened
Both sides put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the first, with Stevens (23-13) answering a four-spot from the Golden Eagles with a pair of their own –
Quinton Sterling plated
Chip Krese, who led off with a single, with a sac fly and
Veer Wadhwani singled home
Adam Barrington, who drew a walk.
After
Dawson Guerard escaped a bases loaded threat unscathed in the top of the second,
Vinnie Stigliano led off the bottom of the inning with a well-struck double, stole third, and scored on a single by Krese. Two batters later,
Griffin Zitko hit a laser off the top of the scoreboard in right-center, flipping the score from 4-3 Golden Eagles to 5-4 in favor of the Ducks.
Dylan Fishbough made it 6-4 after three when the senior singled, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice, then scampered home when Stigliano (reached on the fielder's choice) got caught in an extended rundown.
That score held into the bottom of the fifth when Sterling followed a
Garret Wolf single with an opposite field home run, doubling Stevens' lead to 8-4. The Ducks tacked on another in the sixth following a Krese double and Barrington RBI single, with that holding up as the final runs of the game as the Ducks' bullpen locked down the Golden Eagles following the four-run first.
