BRONX, N.Y. – Senior forward Jon Almonte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) scored on a layup with 10.7 seconds left to lift Stevens Institute of Technology to a 64-63 win over New York Maritime on Thursday in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Stevens (1-12/1-5 Skyline) overcame a six-point deficit with 2:17 remaining to notch its first win of the season. Maritime falls to 2-10 and 1-5.
Stevens trailed 63-61 with 42 seconds left. Senior forward Eric Stanley (New York, N.Y./Solebury Prep) sank the first of two free throws, but missed the second. Junior forward Jordan Clark (Hopewell, Ohio/Muskingum) grabbed the offensive rebound and the Ducks called timeout with 39 seconds left. With the shot clock winding down, freshman guard Floyd Morris (East Windsor, N.J./Peddie School) drove the lane and fed a pass in traffic to Almonte who scored on a reverse layup to put Stevens ahead 64-63.
