HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman forward Mike Benziger scored 14 points off the bench, and senior forward Farid Johnson scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Manhattanville College of a 70-59 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.
Manhattanville earned its fourth win in five games, improving to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in Skyline play. Stevens falls to 1-13 and 1-6.
Stevens held a 19-16 lead following a jumper by freshman guard Floyd Morris (East Windsor, N.J./Peddie School) with 6:22 left in the first half. Manhattanville then took control, using a 14-2 run to close the first half. Benziger had two 3-pointers, including one at the 4:23 mark that gave the Valients the lead for good, 21-19. Johnson scored the last four points of the half to give Manhattanville a 30-21 lead at the break.
Leading 45-36 win 10:24 left in the second half, the Valients used a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to extend their lead to 20 points. Manhattanville was 10-for-10 at the free throw line during that stretch.
Stevens used a 15-2 spurt late in the game to trim a 21-point deficit to eight. Freshman guard Ryan Lynch (Medford, N.J./St. Joseph’s Prep) had seven of his season-high 16 points during the run. Sophomore guard Pat McCann (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) added four points, including a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left that pulled the Ducks within 67-59.
Manhattanville, which shot 7-for-13 from 3-point range, also received 11 points from junior forward John Danielski. McCann finished with nine points for Stevens while senior guard Jon Almonte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) added eight points and nine rebounds.
Stevens returns to action on Monday, January 20, with a 6 p.m. Skyline Conference game against Mount St. Vincent at the Canavan Arena.
