TROY, N.Y. - Senior forward Eric Stanley (New York, N.Y./Solebury Prep) scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, but Stevens Institute of Technology dropped a 67-57 overtime decision to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference men's basketball game at Robison Gym.
It was the second overtime loss of the season for Stevens, which falls to 0-7. Rensselaer improves to 4-3.
With the score tied at 54-54 at the end of regulation, RPI scored the first nine points in overtime. Jared Hite, who led Rensselaer with 15 points and 15 rebounds, scored the first four points in overtime while Kevin Moore scored the final four points in a 9-0 run. The Ducks were held scoreless until freshman guard Floyd Morris (East Windsor, N.J./Peddie School) connected on a 3-pointer with just 23 seconds remaining to trim the Engineers' lead to 63-57. It was Stevens' only basket in overtime as it was just 1-for-11.
Stevens built a 10-point lead in the first half before settling for a 30-22 halftime lead. Trailing 20-19 with 4:06 left in the first half, the Ducks scored 11 straight points in a span of just over three minutes. Senior forward Jon Almonte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) scored seven of his 15 points during that stretch to give the Ducks a 30-20 lead.
Rensselaer opened the second half by scoring the first seven points. Hite scored five points as the Engineers pulled to within 30-29 with 17:35 left. The game was tied nine times in the second half.
Stevens plays its first home game of the season on Monday, January 6, when it hosts Mount St. Mary College in a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference game at the Canavan Arena.
