HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior forward Eric Stanley (New York, N.Y./Solebury Prep) scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 70-44 win over New York Maritime on Saturday in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.
Stevens (3-13/3-6 Skyline) has won three of its last four games after starting the season 0-12. New York Maritime falls to 3-13 and 1-7 in Skyline play.
The Ducks never trailed in the game. After Maritime guard Gary Browne tied the game at 15-15 on a layup with left in the first half, Stevens ended the half with a 12-4 run to take control. Senior guard Nik Rao (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) provided a spark off the bench, putting the Ducks ahead with a 3-pointer at the 6:10 mark. He then assisted on a layup by senior forward Jon Almonte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and connected on another 3-pointer with left. Stanley then converted a three-point play off a Rao assist to give Stevens a 26-17 lead with 2:21 left in the half.
Leading by eight points, 33-25, with 17:37 left in the second half, Stevens put the game away with a 13-0 run in a span of four minutes. Freshman guard Floyd Morris (East Windsor, N.J./Peddie School) scored the first three points and freshman guard Ryan Lynch (Medford, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) connected on a pair of 3-pointers. The Ducks shot an impressive 64.3 percent (18-for-28) in the second half and led by as many as 30 points on three occasions.
Morris added 11 points and a season-high eight assists. Almonte and Rao added nine points each while Lynch and sophomore forward Dan Jordan (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) scored eight apiece. Jordan also pulled down seven rebounds.
Browne led New York Maritime with 14 points and six rebounds. The Privateers were held to just 29.4 percent shooting and also committed 22 turnovers.
Stevens returns to action on Monday, January 25, with 7 p.m. Skyline Conference game in Newburgh, N.Y., against Mount St. Mary.
