HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior outside hitter Brian Woodworth (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) and sophomore outside hitter Chris Bock (Orlando, Fla./University) had 11 kills apiece as Stevens Institute of Technology earned a 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-27) win over New Jersey City University on Wednesday in a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Metro Division match at the Canavan Arena.

Stevens (3-0, 1-0 NECVA Metro), ranked fourth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III coaches poll, easily captured the first two games as Bock had six kills in the first game and Woodworth contributed five kills and one service ace.  As a team, the Ducks hit .328 with 58 kills and just 19 errors in 119 attempts.  The match was the season opener for New Jersey City (0-1, 0-1 NECVA Metro).

Stevens freshman Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) was the only player to play all three games.  Twelve different players saw action (three liberos) with eight different players recording kills.

The Ducks never trailed in the third game even with four freshmen on the court.  New Jersey City, which also started five freshmen, closed to within two points on three occasions in the final game.  A freshman answered each time for the Ducks with Sean Whelan (Springfield, Mass./Science & Technology) had a kill at 25-23.  Stoner recorded kills with the margin at 28-26 and 29-27.

For the match, Stoner and sophomore David Byrne (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) had nine kills each.  Freshman Jonathan Williams (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) had eight kills and just two errors in 15 attempts.  Freshman Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) had 32 assists while setting the last two games.

New Jersey City was paced by freshman middle hitter Damon LaSalle who had seven kills.  Junior outside hitter Jean Sanchez had five kills and nine digs.

Stevens is back in action on Saturday, January 24, when it opens play at the two-day Vassar Invitational.
