OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Carl Gervais led four players in double figures with 15 points as SUNY-Old Westbury earned a 70-55 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday night in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at the Clark Athletic Center.
Old Westbury improves to 11-7 overall and 7-1 in the Skyline. Stevens drops to 3-17 and 2-8.
Old Westbury led the entire way. Gervais scored the first basket and Sal Clark added a jumper to stake the Panthers to a 4-0 lead. Old Westbury led by as many as seven points in the first half, 20-13 with 8:21 left. Stevens pulled to within one point on two occasions. Sophomore guard Adam Cirnigliaro (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) drained a 3-pointer with 3:32 left to pull the Ducks within 22-21. After Dervent Williams made a 3-pointer for Old Westbury, sophomore guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) answered with a 3-pointer for Stevens to cut the Old Westbury lead to 25-24 with 1:05 left in the half. Clark added a basket for the Panthers to increase the margin to 27-24 at halftime.
Old Westbury took control by using a 14-2 run to open the second half. Gervais and Williams had seven points apiece to ignite the Panthers. A conventional 3-point play by Williams put Old Westbury ahead 41-26 with 12:31 to play. Stevens got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Dominkewicz had 21 points – 17 in the first half – to lead all scorers. Sophomore forward Michael Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) added 12 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman forward Stephen Peters (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Storm King) had 11 points and eight rebounds in 39 minutes of action.
Clark finished with 14 points, Williams 13 and Michael Garrett 12 for Old Westbury.
The Stevens men’s basketball team is back in action on Tuesday, February 3, when it hosts Centenary College in a 8 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
