Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Mount St. Mary Despite 25 Points From Dominkewicz

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior guard Brendan Twomey scored 26 points to lead Mount St. Mary College to an 83-72 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday night in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.

Mount St. Mary improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in Skyline Conference play.  Stevens drops to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Mount St. Mary never trailed in the game.  The Blue Knights used full-court pressure to open up a 24-8 lead with 12:16 left in the first half.  Twomey had 11 points while freshman guard Mike Hoyt contributed nine during the opening run.

Trailing 29-15 with 8:43 left in the first half, Stevens used a 15-2 run in a four-minute span to pull within one point.  Sophomore guard Ryan Kander (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Xavierian) had eight of his 14 points while sophomore guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) had seven of his career-high 25 to lead the Ducks’ surge.  Kander’s two free throws with 4:01 left cut the Mount St. Mary lead to 31-30.

Mount St. Mary outscored Stevens 18-7 over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 49-37 lead at halftime.  Twomey had three 3-pointers during the decisive run that gave the Blue Knights control.

The Mount St. Mary lead never slipped below ten points in the second half.  The Blue Knights held their largest lead, 62-44, with 12:49 left on a layup by junior Sergio Guzman.  Twomey was one of four Mount St. Mary players in double figures.  Junior Roberto King had 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Hoyt and Guzman added 12 points each.  The Blue Knights also forced Stevens into 26 turnovers.

Dominkewicz (25) and Kander (14) where the only two Stevens players in double figures.  Sophomore forward Michael Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) and junior guard Pat McCann (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) had eight points each.

Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, January 7, with a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game against Drew University in Madison, N.J.
