HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior forward Jared Hite scored 19 points to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a 71-47 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday night in a non-conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.
Stevens (1-10) held a one-point lead with 7:10 left in the first half following a layup by junior guard Pat McCann (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach). But Rensselaer (5-4) surged ahead with a 13-2 run over the next 5:30. Junior guard Kori Massey connected on a 3-pointer at the 5:52 mark to put the Red Hawks ahead to stay, 18-16. Massey added another jumper and Hite followed with a layup to push the lead to 22-16 with 3:53 left. After Stevens junior Dan Jordan (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) cut the lead to four, Hite scored four straight points while Massey capped the run with a layup at the 1:41 mark that gave Rensselaer a 28-18 lead.
The Red Hawks opened the second half with an 11-2 run in the first 4:05 to put the game out of reach. All five starters contributed to the run with Hite converting a pair of dunks. A 3-pointer by John Van Schaick gave Rensselaer a 47-25 lead with 15:55 left in the second half. The Red Hawks led by as many as 26 points.
Stevens shot just 21.4 percent in the second half (6-for-28) and was outrebounded 48-26 for the game. Sophomore guard Ryan Kander (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Xaverian) was the only Stevens player in double figures as he finished with 10 points. Jordan added nine points with three assists and three steals.
Massey and sophomore Tom Schneider joined Hite in double figures as they finished with ten points apiece. Hite, Schneider and Matt Zepernick finished with six rebounds apiece.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday, January 10, when it hosts New Jersey City University in a 4 p.m. game at the Canavan Arena.
