Greg Higgins (six kills) helped the Stevens men's volleyball team improve to 19-2 with a 3-0 win over York College.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had seven kills and five total blocks and sophomore middle hitter Greg Higgins (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West) had six kills as Stevens Institute of Technology cruised to a 3-0 (30-13, 30-17, 30-16) victory over York College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men’s volleyball match at the Canavan Arena.

Stevens, ranked fifth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III coaches poll, has won 15 of its last 16 matches.  The Ducks are now 19-2.  York (N.Y.) falls to 3-7.

Stevens made quick work of York as it took a 10-0 lead in the opening game.  Sophomore outside hitter Chris Bock (Orlando, Fla./University) served nine straight points with three service aces.  Freshman middle hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added three kills and a block assist during the opening run.  The Ducks came out strong, hitting .536 (20 kills, five errors, 28 attempts) in the first game.  Bock, Stoner, junior Brian Woodworth (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) and sophomore David Byrne (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) – four of the team’s top five hitters – played only the first game before giving way to the reserves.

With seven new players on the floor for the second game, the Ducks continued to roll.  Foley and fellow freshman Tyler Whalen (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) had four kills each in the second game.  Freshman Sean Whelan (Springfield, Mass./Science & Technology) added three kills in three attempts as Stevens hit .235 in the second game (13-5-34).

Foley and Higgins had three kills apiece in the third game while freshman Jonathan Williams (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) led the Ducks with four kills.

On Friday night, Stevens earned a 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 33-31) win over Hunter College in New York City.  Bock had 10 kills, 10 digs and three service aces.  Woodworth contributed eight kills and three digs while playing only the first two games.  Byrne added 7 kills and just two errors in 15 attempts.  He also played just two games.

Stevens is back in action on Wednesday, February 25, when it travels to Brooklyn, N.Y., for an 8:30 p.m. NECVA Metro match against Polytechnic University.
