RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Senior forward Mitchell Senat scored 25 points off the bench to lead the College of Mount Saint Vincent to an 85-68 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday night in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at Hayes Gymnasium.
Mount Saint Vincent (5-9, 3-5 Skyline) used a 19-0 run midway through the second half to pull away. Stevens (6-8, 3-2 Skyline) suffered its first loss after winning two straight.
Stevens, which received 22 points from freshman guard Waleed Farid (Woodside, N.Y./Stuyvesant) pulled to within one point, 54-53, on a basket by Farid with 9:05 remaining. Mount Saint Vincent then scored 19 straight points over the next 5:07 to pull away. Five different players scored for the Dolphins during that stretch as junior forward Greg Casey had five points and Senat contributed four.
Stevens trailed 39-38 at halftime before opening up a 47-43 lead on a layup by sophomore forward Tim Williams (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) with 15:36 left. Mount Saint Vincent countered with nine straight points – four from junior forward James Mooney – to regain the lead for good. Mooney’s basket with 11:06 left put the Dolphins in front 52-47. The Ducks closed to within one point on Farid’s layup, but were never able to regain the lead.
Mount Saint Vincent shot 49.2 percent (29-for-59) from the floor and held a 48-35 rebounding advantage. The Dolphins were also 24-for-39 from the free-throw line, compare to just 3-for-6 for the Ducks.
Junior guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Williams finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively for Stevens.
