HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s basketball team to a 75-53 win over City College of New York on Monday night at the Canavan Arena.
With the win, Stevens evens its record at 4-4. The Ducks didn’t win their fourth game last season until Feb. 3 – their 21st game of the season. CCNY, which has lost nine straight, falls to 2-9.
Stevens led nearly the entire way. Robert Barker gave CCNY a 7-4 lead with a layup at the 16:05 mark of the first half. The Ducks then took control with a 21-4 run over the next eight minutes with seven different players contributing to the run. Freshman forward Joseph Ayodele (Tempe, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) put Stevens ahead to stay, 8-7, with a layup at the 15:10 mark. Sophomore forward Tim Williams (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) contributed six of his 10 points during that stretch.
CCNY closed the first half with an 11-2 run, trimming a 15-point deficit down to 32-26. Stevens put the game away at the beginning of the second half. The Ducks used a 19-5 run over the first 6:43 of the half to open up a 20-point lead. Dominkewicz had 10 of his 17 points during that stretch.
CCNY got no closer than 18 points the rest of the way. Stevens led by as many as 27 points – 69-42 – with 5:27 remaining.
Stevens shot 56.7 percent in the second half (17-for-30) in pulling away. The Ducks shot a season-high 50 percent from 3-point range (6-for-12) and held a 43-36 rebounding advantage. Stevens also held CCNY to 37.0 percent shooting and forced the Beavers into 24 turnovers.
Darryl France paced CCNY with 15 points while Barker added 12 points. Michael Loubier had eight points along with a game-high nine rebounds.
For Stevens, freshman Waleed Farid (Woodside, N.Y./Stuyvesant) had nine points off the bench while juniors Floyd Morris (East Windsor, N.J./Peddie School) and Isaac Moore (Phoenix, Ariz./Moon Valley) had seven points apiece.
Stevens is back in action on Wednesday, January 5, when it travels to Troy, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. game against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
