HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior outside hitter Chris Bock (Orlando, Fla./University) and sophomore outside hitter Shane Pierson (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) recorded 10 kills apiece to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-16, 30-19, 23-30, 30-18) win over Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday night in a non-conference match at the Canavan Arena.

Stevens, ranked sixth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III coaches poll, improved to 9-4 with its sixth straight win.  Philadelphia Biblical falls to 3-2.

Stevens controlled the match from the outset, hitting .400 (12-4-20) in taking the opening game 30-16.  The Ducks’ reserves kept up the pace in the second game, hitting .306 as a team (14-6-32).

Philadelphia Biblical turned in its best game in the third game.  A kill by Pierson cut the Crimson Eagles’ lead to 21-20, but Philadelphia Biblical scored eight of the next nine points to open up a 29-21 lead.  Senior Jade Brubaker, who led all players with 19 kills for the match, recorded nine kills during the third game in which the Crimson Eagles hit .441 as a team.

Reinserted into the match in the fourth game, the Stevens starters forged a quick 14-8 advantage.  The Ducks, who committed just three attack errors in the fourth game, widened their lead to 20-12 on the strength of four straight service points by junior outside hitter Greg Higgins (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West).

Higgins finished with three service aces, five digs and six block assists while playing just two games.  Freshman outside hitter Brian Carlson (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) had eight kills while sophomore middle hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had three kills and a team-leading seven total blocks.  Sophomore middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had six kills in six attempts.
